Steel is the most recycled material in the world. Our EAF technology is far more efficient and environmentally friendly than traditional steelmaking, using 82% less energy and producing 63% less CO2 per ton of steel we melt. By using recycled steel, CMC saves more than 19 billion pounds of scrap metal from being landfilled annually — enough to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool 11 times every day for an entire year!
CMC was the first steel manufacturer to adopt the vertical integration model. With over 50 metals recycling centers, 7 EAF mini mills, 2 EAF micro mills, a rerolling mill and over 100 downstream manufacturing locations, CMC is aligned to contribute to the circular economy.
CMC was the first steel company in the U.S. to publish cradle-to-gate, product LCAs and produce EPDs to disclose the environmental performance or potential impacts of our products on the environment. Our product lifecycle assessments consider our products’ climate, resource and waste intensities and impacts. Currently, the GWP 100 of our products (global warming potential effects over a 100-year period) is well below the U.S. steel manufacturing average.
